Cincinnati Public Schools

Aiken College and Career High School offers a college preparatory program exploring careers in Government/Public Administration, Law & Public Safety, Human Services, and Education/Training in a campus-style setting. Ninth-graders study together in the Freshmen Academy, with a common set of teachers working with students to ensure success; a Summer Orientation Program; state-of-the-art technology; and a state grant initiative focused on promotion into 10th grade. Tenth-graders make up the Success Academy where they can take honors classes, and explore colleges and careers. Juniors and seniors make up the Upper Academy. Nearly 15 percent of Upper Academy students take dual-enrollment courses through the University of Cincinnati. The school’s goal for seniors is for each student, upon graduation, to be accepted into a college/university program, an apprenticeship program, or a career placement of choice. The school’s College-Bound initiative provides monthly college visits for each academy, a College Resource Center, GEAR UP and the GE Scholars Program.

Students wear uniforms to class.

Ninth-Grade Application Process, 2008-09

At Cincinnati Public Schools, eighth-graders enter their own applications for high school, after discussing their choices with their parents. Parents do not need to go to high schools to apply for ninth-grade space for their children.

Eighth-graders should study and fill out the sample application forms — mailed to homes in December and available in December online — and use the forms as a guide when applying on CPS-networked computers at their schools during designated weeks.

This system was streamlined to make applying to high schools easier for parents and eight-graders.

This process also can be used by eighth-graders who do not attend Cincinnati Public Schools now. These students are welcome to apply to enter CPS' high schools using a computer at the district's headquarters, the Education Center in Corryville. Please call CPS' Customer Help Center, 363-0123, for information.

Applications received during the Ninth-Grade Application Period will be processed in random order to assure that all participating eighth-graders have an equal chance to enter their first-choice high schools. Although applications will be accepted later, eighth-graders are strongly encouraged to apply during this application period before popular programs fill up.
